Erwin has a commanding presence, standing tall above most members of the Survey Corps, and had a quite muscular build with blond hair kept neatly parted on the left side.

Erwin always wears a calm and collected expression on his face, with his icy blue eyes being one of his most striking features. His eyebrows are also quite noticeable, being very thick and busy.

Erwin is often seen wearing black outfits.

PERSONALITY

Erwin is a complex character, portrayed as serious, calculating, and always planning far in the future.

He is often seen as a very grim individual. He accepts all news, good or bad, mockery or praise with the same stoic attitude. He is also a master strategist.

However, behind his front of assurance and single-minded determination, Erwin still holds his own personal ideas and questions constantly if what he is doing is the right thing.

BACKGROUND

Erwin Smith was born on October 24th. Raised well until he reached the age of four, his mother then passed away due to her health. Later on, his father who worked as a teacher took good care of him.

As a child, Erwin was a curious and insightful individual who did not accept facts at face value. He was very skeptical of whatever around him. One day in his class, he asked his father about several humanitarian cases that occurred decades ago but had not found a common ground until now. Even worse, those cases were mostly regarded as ‘the inheritance of every ruler’. His father shared a theory with him that there are some truths the rulers hide from their people and that the government is absolutely corrupt.

Too innocent to realize why his father would not discuss this in the classroom, Erwin shared it with the other kids in town, which resulted in his father’s ‘accidental’ death, arranged by the Military Police Brigade.

On the day of his father’s funeral, Erwin was determined to always uphold the truth.

He started anew in an orphanage and lived there for years since no one adopted him. He went to school with the help of the scholarship he got and after he graduated from college, he enlisted in the Army.

With numerous commendations, he left the Army after four years of service and moved to another city. Erwin who obtained a private investigator license was soon after hired by a private investigation firm.

A couple of years later, he applied to join the Central Intelligence Agency. Before he could join the Agency, Erwin had to go through a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview, and an extensive background investigation. Upon passing the entrance and psychological examinations, he was contacted by a CIA official who believed he would be perfect for an organization outside of the Agency. In short order, he was recruited into an ultra-secret agency called the Survey Corps.
